What is LLMnesia? How the Extension Indexes and Searches AI Conversations

LLMnesia is a free Chrome extension that automatically indexes AI conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and 10+ other platforms locally in your browser. It stores the index on your device. No cloud sync or account required. When you need to find something you discussed in an AI chat — a prompt you wrote, an answer you received, a decision you documented — you search and it appears instantly.

The problem LLMnesia solves

AI tools answer questions well. They are poor at helping you find those answers again.

Native chat history on most AI platforms searches by conversation title only — not by the content inside the conversation. If you didn't rename the chat, or the auto-generated title doesn't match what you're searching for, the answer is effectively lost. Add in the fact that most people use two or three AI tools regularly, and the retrieval problem compounds: you have to remember which platform you used before you can even start looking.

LLMnesia adds a retrieval layer that sits on top of all your AI tools simultaneously. One search covers everything.

How LLMnesia works

When you visit a supported AI platform, LLMnesia runs a content script that reads your conversation and writes a structured index entry to your local browser storage. This happens automatically — no export, no setup, no manual steps.

The index is stored using the browser's IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local APIs. These are standard browser storage APIs that keep all data on your device. LLMnesia makes no network requests to external servers during indexing or search.

When you open the LLMnesia search interface (via the extension popup or keyboard shortcut), it queries that local index and returns results in milliseconds. Each result includes a jump-back link to the original conversation on the original platform.

Privacy model

LLMnesia's privacy guarantee is architectural, not a policy. There is no server that receives your conversations because the extension never makes outbound requests with conversation data. The entire index lives in your browser.

You can verify this yourself: open your browser's developer tools while using a supported AI platform, filter network requests to those made by the LLMnesia extension, and observe that no conversation data is transmitted anywhere.

You can clear your entire index at any time from the extension settings panel, or export it as a portable file you own.

How it compares to alternatives

The main alternatives to LLMnesia are:

Native platform history — works for single-platform, recent searches. Degrades at volume and doesn't cover other tools.

Manual note-taking (Notion, Obsidian) — works if you maintain the discipline. Requires active effort for every conversation worth keeping.
